Proactive Dance is a theatrical project, a collective work, an open dialogue on gender issues.
Proactive Dance aims to create a safe space where all of us can express and explore the difficulties connected to being perceived as women in today’s patriarchal society.
Being with the body and telling its story together.
Sharing our experiences and turning them into movement.
Proactive Dance is above all a tool for personal and collective growth, strengthening identity and the sense of legitimacy through expressive movement and the sharing of issues highlighted and recognized by the group.
The project has toured to London’s Southbank & Archway, ‘Teatri d’Arrembaggio’ festival in Ostia and ContempHumanity festival supported by Regione Lazio and the theatre company Valdrada Teatro, and to Athens, Greece for a Creative Pedagogy Gathering for theatre and movement practitioners.
“This workshop exceeded my expectations. I came away with such a strong feeling of connectivity with the other participants.”
“I felt free to open up with people I’ve never met before because you created a safe space for us all to be in.”
“I really liked the combination of a quite intense reflection and movement. It made addressing heavy topics feel more like a release.”
CAT CALL COUNTER ATTACK! FLASHMOB
“I now feel confident saying I’m a feminist”
In 2018, with a group of fantastic female identifying women I created Cat Call CounterAttack – a flashmob on London’s Southbank – I held weekly dance theatre workshops focused on exploring different ways to transform story into playfully provocative site responsive performances. Over the course of the workshop, we dove deep and explored different aspects of what it means to be perceived as a female in modern society through experimentation with different theatrical and dance techniques both in the studio and in public spaces. We successfully got people talking about cat calling and the way that women are treated in the street, chatting with audiences of all ages for ages after the performance was finished.
